AWEX Wool Pack Trials

As mentioned in July 2011 Sheepo, AWEX is undertaking a review of the wool pack standard in response to problems identified in NSW of over-width loads. The road rules state that a legal load does not exceed 2.5 metres in width; see below for more of this story.

JointActionDIRECT helping shearers

A Queensland shearer in the Glenn Innes area had been suffering from an elbow injury for many months, not able to get good advice on what to do to move forward with treatment, and getting a bit of the run-around.   After hearing about JointAction’s partnership with SCAA, he contacted JointActionDIRECT, getting good advice on what could be going on, what the recovery would take, and who to contact to get the necessary scans and specialist advice.  Whilst the shearer was in Brisbane, he dropped in to see JointAction partner David Bick (physiotherapist), who also organised an MRI on the same day, and got him to see an Upper Limb Surgeon after the MRI for and opinion on the elbow:

"Thanks for your help yesterday, getting somewhere now. Nothing bad in elbow from the scans but the Doctor sent me for more scans wrist this time. So tennis elbow is the call and hopefully we can repair it thank you so much for all your help."

Unlike many other similar cases, which can drag on for up to a year, with good advice from JointActionDIRECT, the shearer was able to get things moving quickly to address the injury, and start the process of getting back to work. This is a typical case for JointActionDIRECT contacts.

Across Australia injured shearers and shed staff are dealt with in a very piecemeal way, and in many cases ‘give up’ on the system and are lost from the industry and sometimes the workforce. The advisory service (JointActionDirect) is a remote advisory service so that shearers and shed staff, anywhere, anytime, can speak with high-level physiotherapists, ergonomists and other professionals about how best to recover and to actually understand the nature of the injury and expected outcomes.

The injury prevention focus of the partnership is on early identification of aches, pains and injuries; determining if the aches and pains are anything out of the ordinary and providing advice to address the aches, pains and injuries.

JointActionDIRECT is free to SCAA members and their shearers, so get in touch today to get advice immediately:
